WORSHIP, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

-Reverence offered a divine being or supernatural power; also : an act of expressing such reverence
-A form of religious practice with its creed and ritual

Essentially, what the dictionary says about worship is indeed true, but is sure does sound pretty humdrum hey. Plus, it has the tendency of indirectly spelling C-H-O-R-E in the minds of the reader.

But when asked about what worship meant, our oxygen peers had anything but humdrum to share.

“Worship is where I receive, being soaked in His sweet presence and it’s when God ministers to me in his own special and caring way. Worship is more than for just praising and adoring God's beauty, power and love, it’s for a cause. I worship and praise just because…"~ Mae

Those sure didn’t sound like chores to me.

It was palpably no chore for everyone else at oxygen that night as everyone gave their all to worship God. What more, it was an absolute honour and privilege to have with us Lynette Reed, a close friend and an incredibly anointed singer to lead us into a great time of full on worship! Everyone was moved and encouraged to not hold back and to escalate their worship to a higher level that night. And as everyone worshipped, the presence of God was just so real and tangible and God freely continued to touch and connect with the hungry hearts that opened up to Him that night. A heartwarming prayer by Lynette’s other half, Richard closed the meeting for the night and the oxygen family went on to spend time in chatter and to catch up with each other over steamy cups of milo and cookies..

Everyone was pleased to have their own encounter with God that night. God is so good. Amen?
Isn’t it just absolutely fulfilling, rewarding, and refreshing to praise and worship God?

OxyGen Camp 2008

As I reminiscence about camp, these three words can pretty much sum up most of what I, and probably most others, can remember.

Connections were made. Not the unreliable internet company sorts, but the kind of everlasting and meaningful connections. Connections were established with the people around and ultimately with our living and loving God.

A lot of laughing was done. Be it in the sessions, free times or games. The echoing sounds of people just having fun resounded throughout the whole campsite, making it the most enjoyable place to be at that point of time.

This camp was a milestone. Not only will it be down in the OxyGen books of history as our first camp ever, but it will also be down in the history books of everyone present at camp.

Here we had a couch. A coffee table. Smiley pictures all around. Several bean bags. Lamps with soft lights. A huge “television”. Just like home.

Television watching is often a main attraction on one’s living room “itinerary”, so it was here. The live (literally!) Oxygen band started off the night by drawing the crowd in during its real and anointed praise and worship session. Following it was the prime time program, “Peer Sharing”. Ruth, Christine and Don all came onto “screen” and told their stories and experiences, using this to encourage their viewers. As many girls (and some guys?) would remember crying and feeling for the characters in the movie, “A Walk To Remember” or maybe even “The Notebook”, many would remember the stories of their peers in a much more personal and intimate level.

Alike your average living room, this UniSA “living room” certainly did serve its purpose. Not only did the exterior clearly resemble an actually living room, the persons in it were all able to fellowship among one another just as one would in a typical living room setting. However, unlike any regular living room, those present also had the opportunity to connect with God on a very personal level.

Mini Mamak Night

Mini Mamak night was massive for a mini event! Malaysia’s 50 years of independence and the eve of Father’s Day was sure celebrated in style.

But what is “mamak” anyway? I’d explain it for everyone else that doesn’t come from Malaysia and may have heard it being explained before but, like me, has trouble remembering it. According to Reference.com, Mamak is a term (derived from a Tamil word meaning uncle) used in Malaysia to describe the Malaysian Indian Muslim community and culture. As all our events are never short of food, this term “mamak” is used to describe the type of food served: Roti Canai (bread-like) and Curry Chicken with a warm serve of Teh Tarik (a type of tea).

Although, I am pretty sure going to forget what it means again. All I will remember is it’s relation to food. Well, enough for me!

As everyone made their way into the hall for the service, the aroma of roti canai meeting its fate on the barbeque pit wafted in. The only thing I could think about was tearing up that blessed piece of bread and dunking it in some hot curry. But as the dance team did their thing, getting the crowd going and as praise and worship began, my focus began to shift away from my rumbling stomach to an extravagantly loving father God. Pastor Mike also shared briefly about what was within the heart of Oxygen. How as a group, made up from different parts of the world, in a foreign land, can still seek and grow in God together.

And before I knew it, it was time. Time for the 3Fs: Fellowship, Fun and most importantly, FOOD! The roti canai and its accompanying curry chicken left little to the imagination. Yes, tear and dunk it I did. Everyone had the chance of eating to their stomachs content. This is definitely saying something when you take into consideration the size of the stomachs present.

We have frequently heard of people feeling fulfilled after a meal in a good restaurant, but how often do you hear people say that they have been fulfilled physically and spiritually? This is certainly one rare meal we enjoyed in more ways than one!

One stride into the hall was all it took.

I instantaneously felt like Baloo from one of Walt Disney’s most lovable classics, “The Jungle Book”. (I bet the song ‘the bare necessities’ is ringing in your head now, aint it?)

The deco team deserved an award for successfully creating a miniature Amazon right in the heart of UniSA’s City West campus. The brilliant display of eye-soothing green was demonstrated in a spectrum of leaves, flowers, twigs, branches and anything one could think of that’s synonymous to the theme for the night – HERBAL LIFE.

But then I wondered- Herbal Life. What’s the connection? What was it all about? And I bet my bottom dollar that a vast majority of the people who attended the meeting were probably at the same wavelength as I was.

Herbal Life is basically a health product which assists in creating a balanced and healthy diet by emphasizing the usage of herbs and other natural ingredients, with the goal of acquiring good health.

Ps Chiew Har spoke on how our lives resemble the products of herbal life, where there has to be a balance in all components, be it the physical, emotional, spiritual, ethical or other components. It then all made perfect sense.

As everyone reflected on the areas of their lives which needed to be brought back to balance, the hall was filled with angelic voices as the OxyGen choir sang “How I love You”.

Everyone started working on their social component after the meeting ended by a great chatter over a healthy nibble of carrot and cucumber sticks along with some slightly less-healthy biscuits dipped in cream cheese and sweet chilly sauce. Who said healthy food was gross?

However, the greasy food returns, with Mamak Night just around the corner!

NO!

Most people would remember the dialog between an annoying donkey and a fat ogre. Donkey continually pokes his head from the back of their horse-drawn cart asking Shrek and Princess Fiona pleadingly in anticipation and impatience of reaching Far Far Away Land.

Many of us International Students could identify with Donkey on the 4^th of August. We were all counting down the minutes till 7.30pm, the highlight of many students’ fortnight.

As with any other OxyGen meeting, the night started with Praise and Worship, acoustic style. A different flavour to our usual meetings but nonetheless, brought in a fresh presence of God. Pastor Mike, the speaker for the night, challenged us to offer all that we have to the ministry and to God, as did the young boy with his 5 loaves and 2 fishes in the bible.

To add spice and flavour to the night, Ernestine and Jia Ching’s lifegroup presented us with a skit, “What can I do for you?” acting out God’s love to mankind through different ways. Alvin Teng and Mary Loh too presented a song in Mandarin. Truly special as that spoke of the differences in OxyGen. The very differences that brought us together in a unique way.

Last but of course not the least: An overdose of sausages, bread, onions and Milo to close the night. Perfect!

The Grand Opening

Familiar faces. Vibrant chatter. Beaming smiles. Big bear hugs.

Boy, it sure was exciting to be back as a family for the very first OxyGen meeting for the 2^nd half of 2007!

The night was a blast, kicking off with a dance to the beat of “You Don’t Know” by Kierra Kiki Sheard, setting up the perfect atmosphere as the meeting moved on to an awesome time of praise and worship. The highlight of the night was the inspiring message by pastor Rose, all the way from Malaysia, about “insecurity and vulnerability to God”, referring to the first book of the Bible, Genesis 3:7 – 13. From there, she left us with a challenge to ponder upon “Are you allowing yourself to be vulnerable to God, or are you hiding your insecurities from Him..?”

Pastor Rose was not the only VIP we had from Malaysia that put up a great show. Heng Joe, another one of the Malaysian visitors, put together a splendid duet with Ern Chee, singing “Receive The Power” (Guy Sebastian).

It was really exciting to see the OxyGen family growing with new friends from various countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and China. However, it was also pretty sad to have to say goodbye to Lok Ing and Wilson, who were going to Sydney to settle down for good. Not forgetting Zie, who would be missing in action for the next 6 months as he returns to good food and sweaty armpits in sunny tropical weathered Malaysia.(Don’t you just envy him?!!!)

As always, nobody leaves OxyGen meetings hungry. The meeting ended with yummy hotdogs, leaving everyone’s tummies feeling happy and satisfied.

What a terrific way to start off a new semester! Aren’t you all hyped up about the next meeting???

Winter Warmers June 2007

We all know that winter is anything but warm.

Why Winter Warmers then? It’s such an oxymoron.

Maybe for some it was because of the lecture theatre’s warm temperature. Or for others it may have been because of the hot, steaming red bean soup that they indulged themselves in at the end of the night. For the rest it might have been the warm faces that smiled and presented a friendly welcome to them as soon as they walked through the door.
But for most, it was probably the warm presence of God in that place. Whether it was through the anointed Praise and Worship, the motivating message or even the beautiful dance, the presence of God could be felt in such a tangible way. In this time of busyness and frantic studying, the opportunity to slow down and just bask in the presence God was refreshing and warmed everyone’s spirit and soul.
Yes, it may be Oxygen’s last meeting for this semester, but that warm feeling everyone caught on that cold winter’s night will definitely remain.

Peer-To-Peer. The theme says it all. This night basically revolved around a time of sincere sharing and awesome testimonies by peers. It of course also involved food and healthy fellowship among all present.

The whole event took off with a great session of Praise and Worship led by Sheena, Ern Chee and the band. The band featured some new blood: Abel and Deborah, who made their drum and backup vocals debut respectively.

This was followed by a song item entitled With All of My Heart (Zoe Girl) by the female quartet: Sheena, Amanda, Ern Chee and Delia. All sounding amazing, together as a group and also in each of their solo parts.

The main session that highlighted the main theme of the night was a time of sharing and testimonies by peers, Alvin, Ernestine and David. Alvin spoke about humility and servanthood, how we should not always look at man, but towards God, while doing all things, and in the end give back all glory, honour to Him.

Ernestine shared on how everyone should always take the initiative to step out of his/her own comfort zone, and start serving the church in all possible areas. Think:" Ask not what the church can do for you, but what you can do for the church." Based on her experiences, she challenged us to take that very first step, not to sit back and wait, in order to start seeing God's miracles and blessings inundating in our lives.

David spoke about "having authority in the ministry". He emphasized on how we should posses a heart of passion for God, when it comes to serving in the ministry as well as claiming ownership over this ministry. It was a very inspiring talk about how all of us are already leaders in church, and must have that innate confidence before stepping out in authority if we desire to do great things for the Lord.

Aunty Chiew Har wrapped the session up by asking the crowd a very simple, but yet, a very in-depth question. "Can we say it for ourselves that we know God?" It's indeed very easy for all of us to be Sunday church regulars. But in the very core of our own hearts, we need to stand for ourselves, and be convinced about own relationship with God.

Even as there were different messages spoken by totally different characters, all the words spoken left a challenge to move on to greater heights in each individual’s personal life.

Traditionally, the night ended with supper, as we studious students needed it to keep us feeling rejuvenated. A hot Milo-fused-with-melted-chocolate drink as well as sugar coated biscuits. Just enough to leave us on a sugar high with a greater ability to pull an effective all nighter! Fun-bombarded night full of meaningful fellowship indeed!

Hence, that’s how the name “Chicken Run” was born. This was the first Easter celebration Oxygen has had, making brainy use of all the students who were involved in the creation of this legendary event.

A hype-full dance started off the night, followed by games that got the crowd jumping and shouting in anticipation and excitement. Excellent choice of games as everyone had a chance to participate. Just as the producer Sheena Balan predicted, there was an abundance of Easter Eggs due to the outrageous chicken escapade. Those whom won the games were rewarded with chocolate eggs, size of which was dependant on the success of the participants.

The climax of the event was when Pastor Mark got up, speaking not just mere words but words of life. In sum, Pastor Mark reminded everyone once again of how God loves them for who they were regardless of how different. In fact, because of the variety, everyone collectively forms the unique “Oxygen”. Our very own students, Raynu, Woan Yi and Willy proved that by sharing their amazing and vastly different personal stories but however, all ended with a common conclusion: The way God played a major part in the process of them becoming the person they are today. These down-to-earth, everyday stories related brilliantly with many in the audience and thus, made an impact.

Music and songs were incorporated effectively as all the songs fitted in with the event perfectly. An instance was when the song, “The Real Me” by Natalie Grant was sang after Pastor Mark spoke and the all students told their stories. The lyrics along with the melody summed up the night in a way that stuck with everyone.

“Chicken Run” is by no means a letdown. It was immensely satisfying, relaxing and fun at the same time. Most importantly, “Chicken Run” gave everyone in the audience something to bring home, be it chocolate eggs or an impacting word.

It was 7pm and by then people started arriving and filling up the front section. You can sense the anticipation and for many, they were curious about what the fuss about this band was all about. The band, led by Ollie Sebastian, started off with a little intro singing the more than famous song, Vertigo by U2. As the crowd warmed up, Ollie brought the 100-odd crowd into an awesome moment of praise and worship with the mixture of songs from Paradise Church and Hillsong United.

Pastor Cameron Bennett was the guest speaker. He is the Director of Youth Alive SA, and also the youth pastor in Paradise Community Church. His passion is to see this generation of young people to live fully uncompromised for Jesus. Pastor Cameron carried a promising career in football. Life seems to be going smooth. Everything looked good from the outside, but not in the inside. The day he gave his life to Jesus, was the best moment in his life, as all the meaning to life was found in Jesus.

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life", was the key verse Pastor Cameron's emphasised. That God is about people, and He is passionate about us. He has a plan for us, and wants us to be part of it.

It was great privilege to have the Powergen band. As the band brought the session to a close with songs of worship, Pastor Cameron gave an altar call. With his stirring message, and the band's influential worship, a handful of people gave their life to Jesus!

It was a smashing performance by the Powergen band, living up to their name of being one of the best praise and worship bands in Australia.

As the night was still young, everyone continued to fellowship with the drink every Malaysian pride most: “teh tarik” and the old time delicacy of the sponge “pandan” and butter cake. As it was free-flow, it was no surprise the people talk... and talk... and talk... and left the place when the cows came home! -OxyGen-

Mamak Nite March 2007

Truly a food-filled night!!

Well, maybe for some real big eaters, it wasn’t filled enough but it was generally enough to stuff many.

By the time the clock chimed 7 times, the courtyard of UniSA West was packed with 400-ish people, all hungrily awaiting the much anticipated mamak food. In fact, people started coming as early as 5pm to guarantee themselves one of the few allocated walk-in tickets, goes to show how much good food appeals to us students.

As it was afterall a food-filled night, there were 2 main dishes of “roti canai” (similar to naan or a toasted pancake) with “dahl” (curry-ish gravy that accompanies the roti canai) and “nasi lemak” (coconut rice with chilli “sambal” and chicken curry). A very Malaysian-like dessert called “kuih” (like little cakes) completed the satisfying meal, accompanied with a hot drink of the classic mamak “teh tarik” (milk tea). The hot drink wasn’t only rewarding to the tastebuds but was also rewarding in terms of warming up one’s body, as it was a chilly night.

Not only was 400 stomachs rewarded, there were also actual tangible rewards that were won through the lucky draw and quiz. A very practical IKEA table lamp, Starbucks and Myer’s gift cards, USB pen drive and ultimately, the newest iPod Shuffle were given away that night, CONGRATS to all winners!!

Similar to the actual mamaks in Malaysia, there was football videos showed on a big screen. There was also a constant flow of music and along with Alicia Key’s “If I Ain’t Got You” and Innuendo’s “Belaian Jiwa” (a famous Malay song), performed live by 3 singers and 1 electric guitarist. The singers were so awesome that someone commented, “If they were to play me the real song now, I wouldn’t even know the difference.”

Everyone at Mamak Night definitely received a complete package that night, great food, great rewards, great entertainment and of course, great company. Seriously, what more could one ask for? Simply put, it was just a TOP NOTCH night!

Our long-awaited first Mamak Nite of this year is just round the corner. This year we have some fantabulous "nasi lemak" with curry, "roti canai", teh tarik and lots of delicious Malaysian desert.
